The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien feature Gandalf as a main character. He is the leader of the Fellowship of the Ring, a wizard, and a member of the Istari order. The Old Norse Catalogue of Dwarves, or Dvergatal in the Völuspá, is where Tolkien got the name Gandalf. Gandalf is a powerful wizard who carries one of the Three Rings, but he primarily uses encouragement and persuasion. He travels constantly and sets out as Gandalf the Grey, a man of immense understanding. Gandalf is committed to destroying the One Ring in order to oppose the Dark Lord Sauron. He is connected to fire, and the Ring of Fire, Narya, is his power ring. As a result, he enjoys using pyrotechnics to amuse the Shire’s hobbits while resorting to using fire as a weapon when necessary. He is an immortal spirit from Valinor, belonging to the Maiar, although his body is mortal. At one point, Tolkien called Gandalf an angel in human form; thereafter, he and other academics compared Gandalf to the Norse god Odin in his Wanderer form. Some have referred to Gandalf as a mentor who supports the heroes, like to Virgil in Dante’s Inferno or the Cumaean Sibyl who helped Aeneas in Virgil’s The Aeneid.
